An operational approach to the nowcasting of an intense thunderstorm over Liguria

چکیده

In the period between late spring and early summer as well as in autumn, the Mediterranean is often affected by rapid development of intense convective systems. In some cases the operational NWP models are able to provide good indication of occurrence of such severe weather events (potential instability conditions) but often location and intensity of convective precipitation are poorly forecasted. The approach of “PV-thinking” revealed itself as a good tool to identify favorable conditions for triggering such systems, partially filling this lack of information and supporting meteorologists in the very short range weather forecast. Moreover, the advanced use of data provided by SEVIRI channels onboard MSG satellite, makes possible an effective application of the PV approach, improving forecast skill also in areas where local effects are not well described by the models and/or by the data assimilation. The aim of this work is to show how the application of the MSG tools together with the PV philosophy helps in the diagnosis and nowcasting of intense thunderstorms triggered by tropopause, with particular attention to a case of intense convection over northwestern Italy during spring 2005.

Nowcasting Storm Initiation and Growth Using GOES-8 and WSR-88D Data

The evolution of cumulus clouds over a variety of radar-detected, boundary layer convergence features in eastern Colorado has been examined using Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) imagery and Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) data. While convective storms formed above horizontal rolls in the absence of any additional surface forcing, the most intense storm...

Thunderstorm nowcasting is an important function for the severe weather forecaster. The usual method is for radar to detect thunderstorms, and for downstream systems to generate ’threat areas’ for issuing warnings. However, these threat areas are difficult for other systems to work with as they are not mathematically well defined. In this paper we develop an algorithm, THESPA (THunderstorm Envi...

The Role of Total Lightning in Thunderstorm Nowcasting

The objective of this paper is to show that observations of total lightning activity provide significant benefits for thunderstorm nowcasting problems. For the purposes of this paper, the term “total lightning activity” refers to the combination of in-cloud (IC) and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes. We focus on a couple of key nowcasting issues in this paper: (1) thunderstorm growth and d...

Electrical thunderstorm nowcasting using lightning data mining

This paper presents a study developed at SIMEPAR (Paraná state weather service) using lightning data for electrical thunderstorm nowcasting. Thunderstorm electrical data collected at SIMEPAR such as lightning location, time of occurrence, current intensity, polarity, etc, are stored in real-time in a relational database. As a first step of this study, Microsoft Business Intelligence bundled wit...

Operational Application of Optical Flow Techniques to Radar-Based Rainfall Nowcasting

Hong Kong Observatory has been operating an in-house developed rainfall nowcasting system called “Short-range Warning of Intense Rainstorms in Localized Systems (SWIRLS)” to support rainstorm warning and rainfall nowcasting services. A crucial step in rainfall nowcasting is the tracking of radar echoes to generate motion fields for extrapolation of rainfall areas in the following few hours. SWI...
